Chinese herbalists suggest that an excessive amount of mangoes will lead to nephritis, an inflammation of the kidneys.

Chinese herbalists also suggest that eating mangoes, or drinking mango juice, after eating a meal will cause swelling in the stomach.

Chinese herbalists have, for centuries, also warned and cautioned that mangoes should never be combined with foods that have a pungent flavor such as garlic, onions, green onions, etc as this can potentially lead to itchy skin and/or jaundice.

Although mangoes are traditionally considered to have a yin (cooling) energy, some types of mangoes may have a slightly yang (warm) energy.
