Advertizing Sells: How Pharmaceuticals Market

Isn’t it exciting that pharmaceutical companies have decided to educate us on television about the new drugs that they have developed.

Now, for example, if you are feeling depressed, wet your bed, have short eyelashes, have erectile dysfunction [E.D.], or assorted other health care problems, you can find out about the latest drugs that the pharmaceutical companies have developed to solve these problems.

It certainly must help your medical doctor when you go to his or her office and, not only can tell him or her what your problem is [self diagnosis], but also what drug you believe would be the best one for him or her to prescribe for you. When you do this, it must give your doctor a lot of time to deal with more difficult, uninformed patients, as well as decreasing the time that your doctor has to spend keeping up with information about all the new drugs that come out each year.

Before the pharmaceutical companies decided to start advertizing their drugs on television, they would invite doctors to educational seminars about their new drugs. In order to encourage doctors to learn about and prescribe their new drugs, the doctors were often paid to go to the educational seminars at locations such as expensive hotels or on cruise ships, and often were given other “gifts” just for taking the time to go to the seminars.

Other ways that the pharmaceutical companies make doctors aware of their new drugs are by putting ads in medical magazines, and by pharmaceutical employees dropping by doctor’s offices and leaving, not only colorful information about the new drugs, but also by dropping off sample packages of the drugs that the doctor can give to their patients free of charge.

However, in spite of the tremendous cost of running their drug ads on television, the pharmaceutical companies have found that “educating” the public about their drugs, has led to many people telling their doctors that they want to try the advertized drugs rather than waiting to see if the doctor gives them samples of the new drug or prescribes the drug without the patient’s input. This has resulted in the pharmaceutical companies making tons of money.

So is there any downside to people wanting to try the new drugs that they see advertized on television?

It is important to know that it takes a lot of money and many years of research and testing before the pharmaceutical companies can get an agency such as the F.D.A. [Food and Drug Administration] to allow a new drug to be sold. So why are there new and improved drugs being made by pharmaceutical companies every year? Why don’t the pharmaceutical companies just keep making the same drugs year after year?

One of the books that virtually every doctor and pharmacist purchases every year is the C.P.S. [Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties]. This book not only gives information about what health problem the drug is used for, but also what doses can be used, how the drug works in the body, and the possible side effects that a person can get when they use the drug.

What many people don’t know is, that if they look up drugs in the new C.P.S. and then look up the drugs in a C.P.S. that is five years old, that only approximately 25% of the drugs in the five year old C.P.S. are in the new C.P.S.. Why is that?

In summary, one of the most important things that the pharmaceutical companies have to do, before the F.D.A. agrees that the drug can be prescribed and sold to people, is human trials with the drug. For example, people with high blood pressure [hypertension] are invited to take part in a free human trial of a new drug for high blood pressure. There is a very strict screening process as the drug companies do not want to have any people in the trials that have any other health problem(s). If the trial scan show that the drug lowers high blood pressure with very few of the people in the trials developing any side effects, the F.D.A. lets the pharmaceutical companies advertize and sell the new drug for high blood pressure.

However, in the real world, many people who are started on the new drug for high blood pressure have other health problems, and many of them are already on other medications. Unfortunately, as a result of the new drug for high blood pressure interacting with other medication in the patient’s body, many side effects can happen. Over time, a record of these side effects builds up and the drug companies, and the doctors who have been prescribing the new drug for high blood pressure, realize that there are too many drug interactions and side effects for it to be used any more. But don’t worry, the drug company often has already come up with a “new”and “better”drug to advertize and sell.

The best advice that I heard from a pharmacist and am recommending is, unless there is no other option,that people shouldn’t try a drug for their health problem unless it has been used by many people over a long period of time and is still in the C.P.S. [Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties] after 5 years.
