To B or Not To B

B vitamins are a very important group of vitamins, both for the daily functioning of our body, and for our health.

In spite of these facts, many people are deficient in B. vitamins. Why is that?

The main source of B vitamins is red meats, that is, beef, pork, and lamb. However, many people have eliminated or reduced the amount of red meats in their diet for many good reasons. They do so in order to decrease the risk of the saturated fats in red meats, clogging up their arteries and increasing their risk of having heart attacks and strokes. There is also significant proof that eating a lot of red meats increases the risk of colon cancer.

Although we can get some B vitamins from whole grains, we can't eat enough whole grains to replace the quantity of B vitamins that we would get from eating red meats. Unfortunately, neither poultry such as chicken and turkey nor seafood [fish] which are excellent protein replacements for red meats, contain B vitamins.

Also, it is important to remember that B vitamins are water soluble ant therefore, are not stored in the body. That means that even if you ate a steak today, within 24 to 48 hours, the body has used the B vitamins that it needs and the rest are flushed out in your urine.

What do B vitamins do to help our body to function and keep us healthy?

  • they help to make energy at the cellular level [every part of our body including organs such as the heart, brain, lungs, stomach, kidney, etc. is make up of cells]
  • they help to improve our circulation of blood [which contains oxygen and nutrients] by dilating or opening up our blood vessels
  • they help to balance our blood sugar [move glucose from the blood stream into the cells]
  • they help to make healthy skin and mucous membranes such as those of the eyes and inside the mouth
  • they help us a have a healthy nervous system [keep us calm, and relaxed] and this is why B vitamins are known as the stress vitamins

Some groups of people who tend to have symptoms of B vitamin deficiency are:

  • women on the birth control pill [BCP] - B6 in particular is flushed out of the bodies of women taking the BCP leading to mood swings and PMS [premenstrual symptoms]
  • alcoholics and people who have an alcoholic beverage daily tend to be deficient in B vitamins - this leads to them having many problems with their nervous system such as restlessness, hallucinations, and in extreme cases the DT’s [delirium tremens] or “the shakes”
  • total vegetarians, unless they are taking some form of B vitamin supplement
  • senior citizens and other groups of people who have a limited income - they rarely can afford to buy red meats even if they wanted to

Some people who rarely eat red meat or have no red meats at all in their diet need to make sure that they get enough B vitamins by taking a B vitamin supplement that contains all of the B vitamins. Taking the vitamin supplement with 50 mg of each of the B vitamins [50 mcg of B12] with breakfast and lunch will provide enough B vitamins for the day. It is important to take the B vitamin supplement in the middle of the meal, not at the beginning of the meal, or at the end of the meal. If B vitamins are not taken in the middle of the meal, they can cause nausea.

A more natural source of B vitamins unless, of course, you are sensitive, is bee pollen and royal bee jelly. You can sprinkle a teaspoon of bee pollen on the food you eat at breakfast, and at lunch.

Therefore, it is important to remember, that even if you make healthy dietary choices such as reducing or eliminating how much red meat you eat, you must understand what this might cause you to be missing in your diet [B vitamins] and why and how you need to replace it.

Hatha Yoga

Have you been wanting to do hatha yoga (stretching) but have found it either too difficult or you are not that flexible? If yes, and even if no, watch Jesse do some pure hatha yoga routines.

Unlike flow yoga, each pose in pure or traditional hatha yoga is held for a few minutes. While holding the pose, you focus the mind on the stretch. When you focus the mind, that's when you find silence.

Jesse is not flexible — never has been and probably never will be flexible like others. But it doesn't matter. In pure hatha yoga, how flexible you are makes no difference. It's all about loving the pose and focussing the mind on the stretch.

If you want to learn pure hatha yoga, now you can by following Jesse on a series of hatha yoga routines.
